What is Tapping?
Tapping, also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), is a set of simple techniques that address the mind-body connection.
With Tapping, you tap gently with your fingertips on acupressure points along your body's energy pathways, while you focus on an event, thought, or emotion. The Tapping allows the emotion associated with an event to be released, freeing it from your energy system, hence the name "Emotional Freedom Techniques."
With stress, emotions can disrupt your energy system, which is often part of why you don't feel well. When the emotions are released, the energy is freed up to be used for other things, like health and well-being.
As a Nurse, you know that the body is run by energy. You can see that in EKGs and EEGs. So it is vital to your health and well-being to have your energy flowing freely.
Is Tapping New?
Tapping was first used in the 1970s by psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan, who decided to try it with a patient who had a stubborn water phobia. It worked so well, that he began developing it further into algorithms, or sequences, of tapping points. In the 1980s, a Stanford-trained engineer, and student of Dr. Callahan, named Gary Craig, simplified the method as what it is today and called it Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT. The term Tapping is the most commonly used term for EFT and is easier for most people to remember.
Since it's creation, EFT Tapping has been used by millions of people around the world to release emotions and gain freedom from negative stress emotions, such as anger, worry, anxiety, grief, shock, overwhelm, and many more. It is also used quite effectively for pain relief, since pain and emotions are tied together. Since emotions affect all parts of our lives, including work, finances, self-esteem, relationships, and even sports, Tapping can be used to support you to feel better and live happier.
How Does Tapping Work?
The simplified way to explain this is that Tapping works to calm the brain. When a thought or event triggers you, it causes a disruption in your energy system and also stimulates your brain to go into the "fight or flight" response, activating the nervous system and releasing stress chemicals and hormones, such as epinephrine and cortisol.
Tapping works to calm the "fight or flight" response in your brain and re-balance your energy system . Research studies have demonstrated that Tapping can reduce cortisol in the body.
Technically, Tapping is easy. There's no pain, since you are using your fingertips to gently tap on specific areas of your body. And it can be done anywhere and anytime. You can learn the Tapping points and how to Tap while you focus on and talk about what's bothering you.
As an EFT Practitioner, I can assist you in learning this process, so you can use it on your own.
