I Was Spinning on the Stress Cycle and Going Nowhere Fast.
I’ve often been told that I look calm. That’s a good thing for a Nurse and Teacher. Adding to that, I’m pretty organized and efficient, so it always appeared I was on top of everything. But what people didn’t see was that the inside didn’t match the outside. In trying to keep my external world running smoothly, I was letting my internal world crash and burn.
My body has been a good barometer of how my internal world is working, but I wasn’t tuning in and listening. I just kept pushing it to keep going and going. And it did, while the depletion symptoms kept getting stronger and stronger. I felt tired and exhausted a lot of the time, had various body pains, headaches were frequent, and my shoulders had knots that felt like boulders. I tried deep breathing and resting when I could, but my mind was never able to quiet down. Besides, others needed me, so I kept going - until the pain finally got my attention.
One evening, after probably the 100th time of my husband performing deep massage on my shoulder knots to break them up, I’d had enough. Through my tears, I knew what I was doing had to stop. Enough was enough!
I made a commitment to myself. In that moment, I decided that I was going to end this pattern of stress, no matter what.
I became fascinated with the cause and effect of stress and the mind/body connection, and studied and researched all I could find. Then I used what I learned to create tools to reduce my stress and start to feel better again - and I did! And I continue to develop new tools as I learn even more, including using the amazing technique of Tapping.
These tools aren’t a one-time fix, and I still experience stress (I’m human after all) and residual pain (from years of neglect), yet I know what to do in the moment, and in preparation, to keep my internal world as calm as my external world appears. And I’ve learned that taking good care of myself is not an option.
So now, I’m on a mission to teach caring, compassionate, hard-working Nurses like you how to Break the Stress Cycle - to reduce your stress, relax your mind, and re-energize your body, so you can continue to help others without depleting yourself.
As a Nurse and Educator for over 30 years and a Certified Life Coach for 15 years, I’ve taught these concepts to students, new and seasoned nurses, patients, and private clients.
I know how to take complex ideas and make them easy and actionable. I show my clients simple, quick, and effective ways to break the stress pattern for good.
Unlike most approaches to stress reduction, which focus mainly on breathing and relaxation techniques, I teach tools that address all areas of the stress cycle, including shifting negative thoughts and emotions, and I work with clients in a safe and supportive way.
And a huge bonus of knowing these tools is that they will work in any area of your life and you will have them for the rest of your life!
